What is a mandatory plan?

A mandatory insurance program is offered to an institution and requires all participants in a given population to purchase the coverage. HTH Worldwide offers mandatory plans with both soft and hard waiver (the latter requires collection of paperwork proving other coverage) features to allow those individuals already covered by another plan to opt out of the insurance.

What is the value of a mandatory plan?

Mandatory plans provide the lowest possible premium and the ability to easily keep track of all insured participants. Furthermore, a mandatory plan allows peace of mind - knowing that all participants are covered and minimizing an institution's potential liability in the event of injury or illness to an international visitor. Mandatory plans decrease the burden on the international student or scholar of procuring health insurance. A mandatory plan may also ensure that your organization is meeting federal regulations for J-1 scholars and being prepared for similar F-1 visa regulations.

Should my institution develop a mandatory or voluntary insurance program?

Mandatory plans generally work best for groups of 25 or more participants and require some organized administration by the issuing institution, including premium collection. Voluntary plans work best for small groups and offices that cannot support premium collection and some administration. Consult an HTH Worldwide Account Executive to determine the most appropriate plan for your organization.
